Courtesy Pay Service (Discretionary Overdraft Service)
SUMMARY OF SERVICE
Advantis offers Courtesy Pay (Discretionary Overdraft) service to qualified members on all checking accounts (except for Health Savings Account [HSA] checking accounts). If you receive this notice, you qualify for the Courtesy Pay (Discretionary Overdraft) service. In addition to this informational document, you've also been given a notice titled “What You Need to Know About Overdrafts and Overdraft Fees”. The Courtesy Pay service is the “standard overdraft practices” referenced in the notice.
The Courtesy Pay (Discretionary Overdraft) service is offered as a way to help cover inadvertent overdrafts or unexpected expenses that may occur from time to time. The service is offered at the sole discretion of the credit union and we reserve the right to refuse to pay any transaction that may draw on insufficient funds. For example, we typically will not pay overdrafts if your account is not in good standing or you are delinquent on an obligation to the credit union.
An overdraft occurs when you do not have enough money in your account to cover a transaction, but we pay it anyway. Please refer to your Membership and Account Agreement for a more thorough explanation of factors that determine when an overdraft occurs and when you may incur a fee for overdrawing your account. The terms of the Membership and Account Agreement are incorporated herein, and both this document and the Membership and Account Agreement are meant to be interpreted together.
AUTOMATIC ENROLLMENT FOR CHECKS AND ACH TRANSACTIONS
You will be automatically enrolled for checks, recurring debit card, and electronic transfer (hereafter referred to as ACH) transactions unless you Opt Out. If you would like to Opt Out, please read the “Opting Out of Courtesy Pay” section below and follow the directions provided.
OPT IN REQUIRED TO ENROLL FOR ATM AND EVERYDAY DEBIT CARD TRANSACTIONS
You must separately choose to Opt In if you would also like Courtesy Pay services for your ATM and one-time (Everyday) debit card transactions. Directions for opting in are in the “Opting In for ATM and Everyday Debit Card Transactions” section.
REMOVAL FROM COURTESY PAY SERVICE
We reserve the right to remove you from the service if you fail to pay back your overdrafts (including overdraft fees), become delinquent on any obligation to the credit union, declare bankruptcy, or cause the credit union a loss.
HOW COURTESY PAY WORKS
Checks and ACH: Normally, when an item will overdraw your account, it is returned unpaid and we will charge you an overdraft fee. With the Courtesy Pay service, we may, at our discretion, pay a check or ACH item instead of returning it unpaid. We will still charge you an overdraft fee, but the service will help you avoid additional returned check fees and late fees charged by merchants, service providers, creditors, and others, and help protect you from possible late payments that could hurt your credit rating.
ATM and everyday debit card: Normally, when you have insufficient funds in your account, your ATM or point-of-sale (POS) purchase will be declined and you will not be able to complete the transaction. With the Courtesy Pay service, we may, at our discretion, approve your transaction instead of declining it (allowing you to get cash or complete the purchase), but you will be charged an overdraft fee if the transaction overdraws your account.
We pay overdrafts at our discretion, which means we do not guarantee we will always authorize and pay any type of transaction. If we do not authorize and pay an overdraft, your transaction will be declined.
FEES FOR COURTESY PAY
Our current overdraft, NSF, or returned item fee is $10.00. For check and ACH transactions that overdraw your account, you will be charged a fee whether we pay the item or not. For ATM and everyday debit card transactions, the overdraft fee will only be charged when we pay a transaction that overdraws your account. The overdraft fee will be charged for each transaction that overdraws your account. Items may clear your account in any order we choose. You are notified by mail of any non-sufficient items that are paid or returned. We have no obligation to notify you before we pay or return an item. There is no limit on the total fees we can charge you for overdrawing your account.
REPAYING OVERDRAFTS
The amount of overdrafts, including any fees you owe us, shall be due and payable immediately. Owners of joint accounts will be jointly and severally liable on any item overdrawing their account. If you do not pay your overdrafts within 30 days, you will be removed from the Courtesy Pay service and the credit union will take additional steps to collect any overdrawn amount.
TRANSACTIONS THAT MAY BE COVERED BY COURTESY PAY
Courtesy Pay may be available to cover checks, recurring debit card and ACH items that overdraw your checking account. This will include items submitted through our Bill Payment system. Recurring debit card transactions are those where youve established a payment relationship with a biller, who periodically charges your debit card. An example of a recurring transaction might be if you have certain utility bills set up to automatically debit your card.
If you choose, Courtesy Pay may also be available to cover overdrafts on your ATM and everyday debit card transactions. Everyday debit card transactions include things like groceries, gas, coffee, or a purchase online. We reserve the right to change the types of items that may be covered by Courtesy Pay.
DIRECT DEPOSITS
Funds directly deposited to your account will be used to pay any overdraft balance. If you receive a direct deposit of Social Security or other federal benefit check and you do not want us to use these funds to repay overdrafts, you must opt out of the service. See the “Opting Out of Courtesy Pay” section below for directions on how to opt out of the Service.
OTHER OVERDRAFT PROTECTION OPTIONS
Advantis members may also designate either a line-of-credit or transfer from an eligible account to cover overdrafts on checking accounts; this service is referred to as an Overdraft Protection Transfer in the Schedule of Fees and Charges disclosure. Both options provide a less expensive alternative to Courtesy Pay and are available to any qualified member. If you have one of these overdraft protection options set up with the credit union, it will be your primary source for covering overdrafts. Courtesy Pay will provide a secondary source of protection and will only be used if your designated primary overdraft source is not able to cover the transaction. Review the Overdraft Protection Options Disclosure, Ask your Member Advisor or contact the credit union at 503-785-2528 or 800-547-5532 for more information about these other overdraft protection options.
OPTING IN FOR ATM AND EVERYDAY DEBIT CARD TRANSACTIONS
Opting in for ATM and everyday debit card transactions may be done in person or by calling 503-785-2528 or 800-547- 5532. You will need to provide us your member number and specify each checking account for which you would like ATM and one-time debit card Courtesy Pay services.
OPTING OUT OF COURTESY PAY
You may opt out of the Courtesy Pay service in person or by calling 503-785-2528 or 800-547-5532. When you call, you will need to provide us your member number. Your opt-out request will apply to all checking accounts under the specified member number unless you tell us otherwise.
COURTESY PAY DOES NOT OBLIGATE ADVANTIS TO PAY OVERDRAFTS
Members do not have a contractual right to Courtesy Pay and payments of overdrafts are not guaranteed by the existence of the service. Advantis Courtesy Pay service is not an obligation of the credit union and we may, at our sole discretion, refuse to provide the courtesy service on any checking account at any time. We reserve the right to discontinue the service, make changes to the service, or change the eligibility requirements of the service at any time without notice.
